Kings and Queens of Scots - Robert III to James VI  (1390 to 1603)

ROBERT III. born 1337, Crowned at Scone 14 August 1390, married in or shortly before 1367, Annabella (died 1401), daughter of John Drummond, of Stobhall, and had issue,

1. David, Steward of Scotland, Earl of Carrick, born 24 October 1378, created Duke of Rothesay, 28 April, 1398, married February 1399-1400 Marjorie (who married 2ndly Walter Haliburton), daughter of Archibald, 3rd Earl of Douglas, and died without issue 26 March 1402.

2. Robert, died young.

3. JAMES, s. as JAMES I.

1. Margaret, married Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas, and Duke of Touraine, and had issue.

2. Mary, married 1stly, 1397, George Douglas, Earl of Angus; 2ndly, 1404, Sir James Kennedy of Dunure; 3rdly, 1413, William Graham, 1st Lord Graham; 4thly, 1425, Sir William Edmonstone of Duntreath. She died 1458, having had issue by all four husbands, and was buried. with the last in Strathblane Church.

4. Elizabeth, married 1387, James Douglas, Lord of Dalkeith, grandfather of 1st Earl of Morton.

ROBERT III died at Dundonald, Ayrshire, 4 April, 1406, and was succeeded by his 3rd son,

JAMES I, born December 1394, captured by the English at sea 4 April, 1406, was a prisoner in England until 1424, and was Crowned at Scone 21 May 1424. He married 2 February 1423-4, Lady Joan Beaufort (who married 2ndly, 1439, Sir James Stewart, the Black Knight of Lorn, and died 15 July 1445), daughter of 1st Earl of Somerset (son of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swinford), and had issue,

1. Alexander, Duke of Rothesay; born 16 October 1430, died in infancy.

2. JAMES (twin with his brother), succeeded as JAMES II.

1. Margaret, married 24 June, 1436, Louis, Dauphin of France, afterward Louis XI, and died without issue 16 August 1444.

2. Isabella, married 30 October 1442, Francis, Duke of Bretagne, and died 1494, leaving issue.

3. Jean, married 1459, 1st Earl of Morton, and had issue.

4. Eleanor, married 12 February 1449, Sigismund von Tirol, Duke of Austria, and died without issue 4 March 1496.

5. Mary, married 1444, Wolfaert van Borselen, Count of Grandpre and Lord of Campvere, in Zeeland.

6. Annabella, married 1stly, 14 December 1447, Louis, Count of Geneva, son of the Duke of Savoy. She was divorced, and married 2ndly before 10 March 1459, George, Earl of Huntly, from whom she was divorced, 2 July 1471.

JAMES I was assassinated at Perth by his uncle, Walter, Earl of Atholl, Sir Robert Graham, and other conspirators, 21 February 1436-7, was buried in the Carthusian Churoh at Perth, and was succeeded by his younger son,

JAMES II, born 16 October 1430, Crowned 25 March 1437, married 3 July 1449, Mary (died 1 December 1463, buried in Trinity College Church, Edinburgh), daughter of Arnold, Duke of Gueldres, and had issue,

1. JAMES, Duke of Rothesay, succeeded as JAMES III.

2. Alexander, Duke of Albany, married 1stly, Lady Katherine Sinclair, daughter of William, Earl of Orkney and Caithness, which married was dissolved on the ground of propinquity, 1478, and the issue was declared illegitimate by Act of Parliament, 1516. He married 2ndly, 19 January 1479-80, Anne, 3rd daughter of Bertrand de la Tour, Count d'Auvergne, and by her had issue, John, 2nd Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland during the minority of JAMES V, married 8 July 1505, his cousin german, Anne, daughter of John de la Tour, Count d' Auvergne, and died without issue 2 July 1536. The Duke was killed in Paris by the splinter of a lance at a tournament, 1485.

3. David, styled Earl of Moray, died in infancy before 18 July 1457.

4. John, Earl of Mar, died unmarried 1479, aged 20.

1. Mary, married 1stly, before 26 April, 1467, Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran. He died circa1474, leaving issue. She married 2ndly, before April, 1474 (Papal Dispensation 25 April, 1476), James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, and died May 1488, having had issue (see ABERCORN, D.). He died 12 November 1479.

2. Margaret, died unmarried.

JAMES II was killed by the bursting of a piece of ordnance at Roxburgh Castle, 3 August 1460 (buried at Holyrood), and was succeeded by his eldest son,

JAMES III, born 10 July 1451, crowned at Kelso, 10 August 1460, married 13 July 1469, Margaret (died 14 July 1486), daughter of Christian I, King of Denmark, and had issue,

1. JAMES, Duke of Rothesay, succeeded as JAMES IV.

2. James, born March 1475-76, created at his baptism, Marquess of Ormond and in 1488, Duke of Ross, Archbishop of St. Andrews 1497, Chancellor of Scotland 1502, died 12-17 January 1502-3.

3. John, created Earl of March 2 March 1485-6 died unmarried 11 March 1502-3.

JAMES III was killed at Sauchieburn, 11 June 1488 (buried. at Cambuskenneth), and was succeeded by his eldest son,

JAMES IV, born 17 March 1472-3, crowned 26 June, 1488, married 8 August 1503, Margaret (who married 2ndly, 6 August 1514, 6th Earl of Angus, whom she divorced; and 3rdly, March 1526, Henry Stewart, Lord Methven, son of Lord Avandale, and died 18 October 1541), eldest daughter of Henry VII, King of England, and had issue, with two daughters , (who died in infancy),

1. James, born 21 February 1506-7, died 27 February 1507-8.

2. Arthur, born 20 October 1509, died 14 July 1510.

3. JAMES, Duke of Rothesay, succeeded as JAMES V.

4. Alexander (styled Duke of Ross); born posthumously 30 April, 1514, died 8 December 1515.

JAMES IV was killed at the Battle of Flodden, 9 September 1513 (buried. at Richmond, Surrey), and was s. by his 3rd son,

JAMES V, born 10 April, 1512, crowned at Stirling 21 September 1513, married 1stly, 1 January 1536-7, Madeline de Valois (died without issue 7 July 1537, buried. at Holyrood), daughter of Francis I, King of France. He married 2ndly, June, 1538, Marie de Lorraine, Regent of Scotland during her daughter's minority (died in Edinburgh Castle, 10 June, 1560, buried at Rheims), widow of Louis d'Orleans, Duke of Longueville, and daughter of Claude de Guise Lorraine, Duke d'Aumale, and had issue,

1. James, born 22 May 1540, died an infant.

2. Arthur, Duke of Albany, born April 1541, died an infant.

1. Mary, Queen of Scots.

The King died at Falkland, 14 December 1542 (buried. at Holyroodhouse), and was succeeded by his only daughter,

MARY, born at Linlithgow, 7 or 8 December 1542, Crowned at Stirling Castle 9 September 1543, married 1stly, 24 April, 1558, Francis, The Dauphin of France; afterwards Francis II. He died without issue 5 December 1560. She married 2ndly, 29 July 1565, her cousin Henry, Lord Darnley (son of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox), created 15 May 1565, previously to his marriage, Duke of Albany, Earl of Ross, and Lord Ardmanach, and had issue. He was murdered at the Kirk of Field, 10 February 1566-7. She married 3rdly, 15 May 1567, James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who was created Duke of Orkney 12 May 1567, and died without issue 14 April, 1578. A prisoner at Lockleven after the defeat at Carberry Hill, the Queen was compelled to abdicate 24 July 1567. Escaping from Lochleven and defeated at Langside, 13 May 1568, she fled to England, and after 19 years' captivity, was beheaded in Fotheringay Castle, Northants, 8 February 1586-7. By her 2nd husband she had an only son,

JAMES VI, born in Edinburgh Castle, 19 June, 1566, became King of Scots 24 July 1567, on his mother's abdication, crowned 29 July 1567, and on 24 March 1603, on the death of QUEEN ELIZABETH I, ascended the throne of England as JAMES I.
