Kings of England - Henry VI to Henry VII  (1422 to 1529)

HENRY VI, King of England, born at Windsor, 6 December 1421, succeeded his father, Henry V, as King of England, 31 August 1422. Crowned at Westminster, 6 November 1429, and as King of France, Paris, 17 December 1431; married at Tichfield, Hants, 22 April, 1445, Margaret (born at Pont-a-Mousson, 23 March, 1429; died at Damplerre Castle, 25 August 1482, buried at Angers), daughter of Rene, Duke of Anjou, King of Sicily, Naples, and Jerusalem, and had issue, an only child,

EDWARD, Prince of Wales, born 13 October 1453, married August 1470, Lady Anne Nevill, 2nd daughter and co-heir of Richard, Earl of Warwick, and died without issue in the lifetime of his father, killed in battle at Tewkesbury, 4 May, 1471. His widow married 2ndly, circa 30 March, 1473, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, afterwards RICHARD III, and died without surviving issue 16 March, 1485.

HENRY VI, who was deposed after the second battle of St. Albans, 4 March, 1461, was reinstated on 9 October 1470, from when he reigned until taken prisoner in April, 1471; he died in the Tower of London, shortly after the battle of Tewkesbury, 21 May, 1471, and was buried at Windsor. Upon Henry's deposition, Edward, Duke of York, son of Richard, Duke of York (see above), succeeded as,

EDWARD IV, King of England, born at Rouen, 28 April, 1442, proclaimed 4 March, and Crowned 28 June, 1461, expelled 9 October 1470, and restored 4 May, 1471. He married at Grafton, Northants, 1 May, 1464 Elizabeth (born at Grafton Regis circa 1437; died at Bermondsey Abbey, 7 June, 1492, buried at Windsor), widow of John Grey, Lord Ferrers, of Groby, and daughter of Sir Richard Widville, Earl of Rivers, and had issue,

1. EDWARD V, afterwards King.

2. Richard, Duke of York, born 17 August 1473, married 15 January 1477-8, Anne (died 16 January 1480-1), only child and heiress of John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk, and, was supposed to have been murdered, with his brother in the Tower of London, 23 June 1483.

3. George, Duke of Bedford, born March 1476-7; died circa 1481.

1. ELIZABETH, born 11 February 1465, married 18 January 1486, HENRY VII, King of England (see below).

2. Mary, born August 1466; died unmarried 23 May, 1482.

3. Cecily, born 1469, 1stly, circa December 1487, John, 1st and last Viscount Welles, KG (see BURKE'S Dormant and Extinct Peerages). He died without male issue 9 February 1498-9. She married 2ndly, 1503, Thomas Kyme, and died 24 August 1507.

4. Margaret, born 19 April, 1472, died an infant and was buried at Westminster Abbey, 11 December 1472.

5. Anne, born 2 November 1475, married as his 1st wife, 4 February 1494-5, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, KG, and died without surviving issue 23 November 1511. He died 25 August 1554.

6. Katherine, born 1479, married October 1495, Sir William Courtenay, afterwards Earl of Devon, and died 15 November 1527, leaving issue. He died 9 June, 1511.

7. Bridget, a nun at Dartford, Kent, born 10 November 1480; died 1517.

EDWARD IV died at Westminster Palace, 9 April, 1483 (buried at Windsor), and was succeeded by his elder son,

EDWARD V, King of England, born. at Westminster Abbey, 4 November 1470, Prince of Wales, and Earl of Chester, 1471, Duke of Cornwall, 1471, Earl of March and Pembroke, 1478, succeeded his father, Edward IV, as King of England, 9 April, 1483, deposed June, 1483, and is supposed to have been murdered in the Tower of London, 23 June, 1483 (buried there), and was succeeded by his uncle,

RICHARD III, King of England, born at Fotheringhay Castle, 2 October 1452, Duke of Gloucester, 1461, Lord High Protector on accession of Edward V, whom he succeeded as King of England. Crowned 6 July, 1483, married at Westminster, 12 July, 1472, Lady Anne Nevill (born at Warwick Castle circa 1454; died at Westminster Palace, buried at Westminster Abbey, 16 March, 1845), widow of Edward, Prince of Wales, only son of Henry VI, King of England, and daughter and co-heir of Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, and had issue, an only son,

EDWARD, Prince of Wales, born 1473; died in the lifetime of his father 31 March 1484.

RICHARD III was killed in battle at Bosworth Field, 22 August 1485 (buried at Grey Friars, Leicester). He was succeeded by,

HENRY VII (the first of the House of TUDOR), King of England, born at Pembroke Castle, 28 July, 1457. Earl of Richmond in succession to his father, 3 November 1456, King of England by conquest proclaimed 22 August, 1485, Crowned 30 October 1485, married at Westminster, 18 January 1486, Princess Elizabeth (born at Westminster Palace, 11 February 1465; died in the Tower, 11 February 1502/3, buried at Westminster Abbey), eldest daughter of Edward IV, King of England, and had issue,

1. ARTHUR, Prince of Wales 1489, born 20 September 1486, married 14 November 1591, Catherine, Infanta of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand V, King of Aragon and Castile, and died without issue 2 April, 1502 (buried at Worcester Cathedral). His widow married 2ndly, 11 June, 1509, her husband's younger brother, Henry VIII, King of England, and died 6 January 1535-6.

2. HENRY VIII, afterwards King.

3. Edmund, Duke of Somerset, born 20 February 1498, died January 1499.

1. MARGARET, Heiress Presumptive, 21 April, 1509 to 1 January 1510-11, and again 22 February 1511 to February 1515-16, born 29 November 1489, married 1stly 8 August 1503, JAMES IV, King of Scots (killed at the Battle of Flodden, 9 Sept 1513), and had with other issue,

JAMES V, King of Scots, born 10 April 1512, married 1stly, 1 January 1536-7, Madeleine (died without issue 7 July 1537), daughter of Francis I, King of France. He married 2ndly, June 1538, Mary (died 10 June 1560), widow of Louis d'Orleans, Duke of Longueville, and daughter of Claude, Duke of Guise, Prince of Lorraine, and died 14 December 1542, having by her had issue, an only surviving child,

MARY, Queen of Scots, born 11 December 1542, married 1stly, 24 April, 1558, Francis, then Dauphin, Titular King of Scots, afterwards Francis II, King of France (died 5 December 1560), but had no issue. She married 2ndly, 9 July, 1565, her cousin Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, Duke of Albany, proclaimed King of Scots, 28 July, 1565 (see below) (murdered 10 February 1566-7), and had issue, an only son.

JAMES VI of Scots, and I of England (see below).

Mary, Queen of Scots, married 3rdly, 15 May, 1567, James Hepburn, Duke of Orkney and Earl of Bothwell (died 14 April, 1578), by whom she had no issue. She was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle, 8 February 1586-7.

Margaret, married 2ndly, 4 Aug, 1514 (annulled 1527), as his 2nd wife, Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus (died circa 1560), and had further issue, an only daughter,

Margaret Douglas, born. 8 October 1515, married 6 July, 1544, Matthew Stuart, 4th Earl of Lennox, REGENT OF SCOTLAND (killed 4 September 1571) and died 9 March, 1577-8, having had surviving issue,

(1) Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, Duke of Albany, born 7 December 1545, the 2nd husband of MARY, Queen of Scots (see above),

Charles Stuart, 6th Earl of Lennox, born 1555, married November 1574, Elizabeth (died 21 January 1581-2), daughter of Sir William Cavendish, of Chatsworth (see DEVONSHIRE, D) and died 1576, leaving issue, an only child.

Arabella Stuart, born 1575, married 22 June 1610, William Seymour, afterwards 2nd Duke of Somerset, grandson of Edward, 1st Earl of Hertford (see below), and died without issue a prisoner in the Tower of London, 25 Sept 1615. He died 27 October 1660.

Margaret, married 3rdly, before 2 April 1528, Henry Stewart, 1st Lord Methven (killed in the battle at Pinkie, 10 September1547), and died 18 October 1541.

2. Elizabeth, born 2 July, 1492, died 14 September 1495.

3. Mary, born 1498, married 1stly, 9 October 1514, Louis XII, King of France (died 1 January 1515), by whom she had no issue. She married 2ndly, 13 May, 1515, as his 3rd wife, Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, KG (died 14 Aug, 1545), and died 26 June,1533, having had issue,

1. Henry, Earl of Lincoln, 1525, born 11 March 1516; died in the lifetime of his father unmarried 8 March, 1534.

1. Frances, born 16 July, 1517, married 1stly, 1535, Henry Grey, 3rd Marquess of Dorset, KG, afterwards Duke of Suffolk (beheaded 23 February 1554), and had surviving issue,

(1) JANE, afterwards Queen.

(2) Katherine, Heiress Presumptive to Queen Elizabeth by nature of the will of Henry VIII, King of England, married 1stly, 21 May, 1553, Henry, Lord Herbert (afterwards 2nd Earl of Pembroke); and 2ndly, December 1560, Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, who died 6 April, 1621. She died in the Tower of London 26 January 1567, leaving issue (see SOMERSET, D.).

(3) Mary, married August 1565, Thomas Keyes, Serjeant-porter to Queen Elizabeth I (se. KEYES, B.), and died without issue 20 April 1578. He died 1571.

She married 2ndly, Adrian Stokes, and died 21 November 1559. He died circa 1581.

2. Eleanor, born circa 1520, married 1537, Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland, KB (died 8 January 1569), and died Nov, 1547, leaving issue, an only daughter and heiress,

Margaret, born 1540, married 7 February 1555, Henry Stanley, 4th Earl of Derby, and died 29 September 1596, leaving issue (see DERBY, E.). He died 25 September 1593.

HENRY VII died at Shene, 22 April 1509 (buried at Westminster Abbey), and was succeeded by his only surviving son,
