Kings of England - Richard I to Edward I  (1189 to 1307)

RICHARD I, Coeur de Lion, King of England; born.at Oxford, 8 Sept 1157; succeeded his father, Henry II, as King of England, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, 6 July 1189, married at Limasol, Cyprus, 12 May 1191, Berengaria (born circa 1163; died at Abbey of Espans, near Le Mans, circa 1230, buried there), daughter of Sancho IV, The Wise, King of Navarre. He was killed in battle at the siege of Castle of Chalus without issue, 6 April 1199 (buried at Fontevrault). He was succeeded by his brother,

JOHN, Lackland, King of England, born. at Oxford, 24 December 1166, succeeded his brother, Richard I, as King of England, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, 6 April 1199. Crowned 27 May, 1199, married 1stly, at Marlebridge, 29 August 1189 (marriage annulled 1200), Isabel, who married 2ndly 1213, Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex (died 1216); and married 3rdly, 1217, Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent (died 1243), daughter and heiress of William, Earl of Gloucester, and, died circa 18 November 1217, buried at Canterbury Cathedral. He married 2ndly at Bordeaux, 24 August 1200, Isabella (who married 2ndly circa 1220, Hugh de Lusignan, Count of La Marche, and died 31 May, 1246, buried at Fontevrault), daughter and heiress of Aymer de Valence, Count of Angouleme, and by her had issue,

1. HENRY III, afterwards King.

2. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, elected, 1256, King of the Romans, born 5 January 1208, married 1stly, 30 March 1231, Isabel (died 19 January 1240) widow of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, and daughter of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and had surviving issue,

1. Henry, born 2 November 1235, married circa 1269, Constance (died circa 1299), widow of Alfonso, Infant of Aragon, and daughter of Gaston VII, Viscount of Bearn, and was murdered at Viterbo, by Guy de Montfort and his brothers without issue, 13 March 1271.

Richard, King of the Romans married 2ndly, 23 November 1243, Sanchia (died 9 November 1261), 3rd daughter of Raymond Berengar IV, Count of Provence, and by her had issue, three sons, of whom,

2. Edmond, 2nd Earl of Cornwall, born 26 December 1250, married 6 October 1272 (marriage annulled), Margaret (died 1312), daughter of Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, and died without issue 1 October 1300.

Richard, King of the Romans married 3rdly, 16 June 1269, Beatrice, daughter of Theodoric von Falkestein, and died 2 April 1272, without further issue.

1. Joan, born 22 July 1210, married 19 June 1221, as his 1st wife, Alexander II, King of Scots and died without issue 4 March 1237-8. He died 8 July 1249.

2. IsabeIla, born 1214, married 20 July, 1235, as his 3rd wife, Frederick II, King of Sicily and Jerusalem, Holy Roman Emperor, and died 1 December 1241, having had issue, two sons and two daughters. He died 13 December 1250.

3. Eleanor, born 1215, married 1stly, 23 April, 1224, William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke. He died without issue 15 April, 1231. She married 2ndly, 7 January 1238-9, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and died 13 April, 1275, leaving issue. He was killed in battle at Evesham, 4 August 1265.

JOHN died Newark Castle, 19 October 1216 (buried at Worcester Cathedral), and was succeeded by his eldest son,

HENRY III, King of England, born at Winchester, 10 October 1206, succeeded his father, John, as King of England and Duke of Aquitaine, 19 October 1216. Crowned 28 October 1216, married at Canterbury, 14 January 1236, Eleanor (died a nun at Ambresbury, 24 June, 1291, buried there), 2nd daughter of Raymond Berengar IV, Count of Provence, and had issue (with a daughter who died young),

1. EDWARD, afterwards King.

2. Edmund, Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster, Leicester and Derby, King of Sicily, born 16 January 1245, married 1stly, 8 April 1270, Avelina (died without issue 10 November 1273), daughter and heiress of William de Fortibus, Count of Aumale. He married 2ndly, before 3 February 1275-6, Blanche (died 2 May 1302), widow of Henry I, King of Navarre, and daughter of Robert I, Count of Artois, 3rd son of Louis VIII, King of France, and died 5 June 1296, having by her had issue,

1. Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster, born circa 1278, married before 28 October 1294, Alice (who married 2ndly, Eubolo le Strange; and 3rdly, Hugh de Freue, and, died without issue. 2 October 1348), daughter and heiress of Henry Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, and was beheaded 22 March 1322.

2. Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and of Leicester, Count of Provence, born circa 1281, married 1298, Maud, daughter and heiress of Sir Patrick Chaworth, Kt, and died 22 Sept 1345, leaving issue,

(1) Henry, 4th Earl of Lancaster, Derby and Lincoln, 1st Duke of Lancaster, created 6 March, 1352, KG, born circa 1299, married circa 1334, Isabel, daughter of Henry, 1st Lord Beaumont, and died 13 March, 1361, leaving issue, two daughters and co-heiresses,

1a. Maud, born 4 April, 1335, married 1stly, Ralph Stafford, son and heir of Ralph, 1st Earl of Stafford; and 2ndly, 1352, William I, Duke of Bavaria, and died without surviving issue 10 April, 1362.

2a. Blanche, married 19 May, 1359, John of Gaunt, 4th son of EDWARD III, King of England (see below).

(1) Blanche, married Thomas, 2nd Lord Wake of Lydell, and died 10 July, 1380. He died without issue 31 May 1349.

(2) Maud, married 1stly, William de Burgh, 4th Earl of Ulster, and had issue, an only daughter, Elizabeth, who married Lionel, Duke of Clarence, 3rd son of EDWARD III, King of England (see below). She married 2ndly, Sir Ralph de Ufford, Justiciary of Ireland, brother of 1st Earl of Suffolk, and had issue, a daughter.

(3) Joan, married 1326, John, 3rd Lord Mowbray, and died after 1345, leaving issue, one son and two daughters. He died 4 October 1361.

(4) Isabel, Prioress of Ambresbury.

(5) Eleanor, married 1stly, circa 1337, John, 2nd Lord Beaumont. He died 1342. She married 2ndly, 1345, Richard Fitz Alan, 9th Earl of Arundel, and died 11 January 1372, leaving issue. He died 24 January 1375.

(6) Mary, married 1341, Henry, 3rd Lord Percy, and died 2 Sept 1362, leaving issue, two sons.

3. John, Lord of Beaufort, died unmarried before 1327.

1. A daughter, died young. 

3. Richard, born circa 1247; died before 1256.

4. John, born circa 1250; died before 1256.

5. William, born and died circa 1250.

6. Henry, died young.

1. Margaret, born 5 October 1240, married as his 1st wife, 26 December 1251, Alexander III, King of Scots, and died 27 February 1274, leaving issue. He died 19 March, 1285.

2. Beatrix, born 25 June, 1242, married 22 January 1260, John II de Dreux, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, and died 24 March, 1275, leaving issue. He died 18 November 1305.

HENRY III died at Westminster Palace, 16 November 1272 (buried at Westminster Abbey), and was succeeded by his eldest son,

EDWARD I, Longshanks, King of England, born at Westminster, 17 June, 1239, succeeded his father, Henry III, as King of England and Duke of Aquitaine, 16 November 1272. Crowned 19 August 1274, married 1stly, Burgos October 1254, Eleanor (died at Herdeby, Lincs, 28 November 1290, buried at Westminster Abbey), daughter of Ferdinand III, King of Castile, and has issue, besides six other daughters,

1. John, born 10 July 1266; died 1 August 1272.

2. Henry, born 1268; died circa 14 October 1274.

3. Alphonso; born 24 November 1273; died 19 August 1284.

4. EDWARD, afterwards King.

1. Eleanor, born 1264, married 1stly, 15 August 1282 (proxy), Alphonso, Infant of Aragon. He died 1282; She married 2ndly, 20 September 1293, Henry III, Count of Bar, and died 1298, leaving issue. He died 1302.

2. Joan, of Acre, born there, 1272, married 1stly, 2 May, 1290, Gilbert de Clare, 3rd Earl of Gloucester and 7th of Hertford. He died 7 December 1295. She married 2ndly, 1297, Ralph de Monthermer, Lord Monthermer, and died 23 April 1307, leaving issue. He died 1305.

3. Margaret, born 11 Sept 1275, married 9 July, 1290, John II, Duke of Brabant, and died 1318, leaving issue. He died 27 October 1312.

4. Mary, born 22 April, 1279, a nun at Ambresbury; died circa. 1332.

5. Elizabeth, born. August 1282, married 1stly , 8 January 1269, John I, Count of Holland. He died without issue 10 November 1299. She married 2ndly, 14 November 1302, Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and Essex, and died 5 May 1316, leaving issue. He was killed 16 March 1321.

EDWARD I married 2ndly, at Canterbury, 8 September 1299, Margaret (died at Marlborough Castle, 14 February 1317, buried at Grey Friars, London), daughter of Philip III, King of France, and by her had issue,

5. Thomas, of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, born 1 June, 1300, married 1stly Alice, daughter of Sir Rodger Hayles, Kt, of Harwich, and had issue,

1. Edward, married Beatrix (who married 2ndly, Thomas de Braose, and died 1383-4, daughter of Rodger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March and died without issue in the lifetime of his father

1. Margaret, Duchess of Norfolk for life, created 1397, married 1stly, John, 4th Lord Segrave (died 20 March, 1353), and had issue, (see MOWBRAY, SEGRAVE AND STOURTON, B.). He died 20 March, 1353. She married 2ndly, Walter, Lord Manny, and died 24 March, 1399, having had further issue. He died 15 January 1372.

2. Alice, married Edward, 1st Lord Montacute, and died 1351, leaving issue. He died 15 July, 1361.

Thomas, of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, married 2ndly, Mary de Braose (died 9 June 1362) widow of Sir Ralph de Cobham, by whom he had no surviving issue, and died August 1338.

6. Edmund, of Woodstock, Earl of Kent, born 5 August 1301, married 1327, Margaret (died 29 September 1349), widow of John Comyn, of Badenoch, and daughter of John, 1st Lord Wake of Lydell, and was beheaded 19 March 1330, having had issue,

1. Edward, 2nd Earl of Kent, born circa 1327; died 1333.

2. John, 3rd Earl of Kent, born 7 April 1330; died 27 December 1352.

1. Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent, born 29 September 1328, married 1stly, 1346, Thomas Holand, Earl of Kent, and had issue. He died 26 December 1360. She married 2ndly, 10 October 1361, EDWARD, the Black Prince (see below), and died 7 August 1385, having had further issue.

6. Eleanor, born 1306, died an infant.

EDWARD I died at Burgh-on-the-Sands, near Carlisle, 8 July, 1307 (buried at Westminster Abbey), and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son,
