Kings of England - Edward II to Harold II  (975 to 1066)

Saint EDWARD II, The Martyr, King of England, succeeded his father Edgar 18 July 975, Crowned at Kingston, born, circa, 963; died unmarried murdered by his stepmother, Wueen Elfrida, near Corfe Castle, 18 March, 979 (buried at Shaftsbury Abbey), and was succeeded by his half-brother,

ETHELRED II, The Unready, King of England, born circa 966, succeeded his half-brother Saint Edward II, 18 March 979; Crowned at Kingston, 14 April 979, married 1stly, 984, Elgiva (d 1002), daughter of Earl Thorold, and had, with other issue,

1. Athelstan, born 986, killed in battle against the Danes, unmarried 1011.

2. EDMUND II, afterwards King.

3. Edwy, murdered 1017.

1. 2. 3. three daughters.

ETHELRED II married 2ndly, 1002, Emma (who married 2ndly, Canute II, King of Denmark and I of England (see below); died at Winchester, 6 March 1052, buried Winchester Cathedral), eldest daughter of Richard I, Duke of Normandy, and by her had issue,

4. EDWARD III, The Confessor, afterwards King.

5. Alfred, blinded by Earl Godwin, and died in prison, circa 1035.

4. Goda, married 1stly, Drogo, Count of Amiens and Vexin, and had issue. He died 1035. She married 2ndly, 1050, Eustace II, count of Boulogne, and died without further issue. He died 1093.

ETHELRED II fled to Normandy, autunm 1013, and was succeeded by,

SWEYN, King of England, by conquest, proclaimed at London, II King of Denmark and Norway from 985. By his 1st wife, Gunhilda (died circa 1015), daughter of Mieceslaus I, Duke of Poland, he had issue,

1. Harold III, King of Denmark, dispossessed by his brother, Canute, and died 1017.

2. CANUTE I, afterwards King.

1. Thyra, born 994, married as his 1st wife, Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and died circa 1018, leaving issue. He died 1053.

SWEYN died at Gainsborough 3 February 1014 (buried at Roskild Cathedral), and upon his death the crown was restored to,

ETHELRED II, King of England, restored on the death of Sweyn, died at London 23 April, 1016, married 1015, Algitha, widow of Sigfrid, a Danish nobleman,and died at London 23 April 1016, and was succeeded by his 2nd son,

EDMUND II, Ironside King of England, born circa 989, succeeded his father Ethelred II 23 April, 1016, married 1015, Algitha, widow of Sigfrid, a Danish nobleman, and had issue,

1. Edmund, born 1016, married Agatha, daughter of Saint Stephen I, King of Hungary, and died without issue in Hungary.

2. Edward the Exile, born posthumous 1017, married Agatha (died a nun (?) at Newcastle-upon-Tyne after 1093), probably daughter of Conrad II of Franconia, Holy Roman Emperor, and died at London, 1057, having had, with other issue,

1. Edgar Atheling, chosen as King upon death of King Harold II by the Witan October 1066, born 1053; died unmarried after 1125.

1. Saint Margaret, married 1068 as his 2nd wife, Malcolm III, Canmore, King of Scots, and died 16 November 1093, leaving issue. He was killed in battle at Alnwick, 13 November 1093.

2. Christina, Abbess at Romsey, Hants, died unmarried

EDMUND II was murdered at Oxford, 30 November 1016 (buried at Glastonbury Abbey), and was succeeded by,

CANUTE I, King of England, proclaimed King in succession to his father Sweyn 1014, disputed the Crown with Edmund II, and obtained by Treaty, Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia. Upon the death of Edmund II he seized the remainder of England to the prejudice of the sons of Edmund II; King of Denmark as Canute II 1016, King of Norway by conquest 1030, born circa 995, married 1stly, Aelgifu, repudiated (died 31 December 1044), daughter of Elfhelm, Earl of Northampton, and had issue,

1. Sweyn, King of Norway, died 1036.

2. HAROLD I, afterwards King.

CANUTE I married 2ndly, 2 July 1017, Emma (died 6 March 1052), widow of Ethelred II (see above), and by her had issue,

3. CANUTE II, alias Hardicanute, afterwards King.

1. Cunigunda, married June 1036, as his 1st wife, Henry III of Franconia, Holy Roman Emperor, and died 18 July, 1038, leaving issue. He died 5 October 1056.

CANUTE I died at Shaftesbury, 12 November 1035 (buried at Winchester), and was succeeded by his 2nd son,

HAROLD I, Harefoot, King of England, succeeded his father 12 November 1035, Crowned at Oxford, and died unmarried. at Oxford, 17th March 1040 (buried at Westminster). He was succeeded by his half-brother.

CANUTE II, Hardicanute, King of England, succeeded his father as King of Denmark, 12 November 1035, succeeded his half-brother as King of England, 10 March, 1040 and died unmarried. at Lambeth, 8 June 1042 (buried at Winchester), and was succeeded by,

Saint EDWARD III, The Confessor, King of England, called to the throne by the Witan, Crowned at Westminster, born at Islip, married 23 January 1045, Edith (died at Westminster Palace, 19 December 1075, buried at Westminster Abbey), daughter of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, by Gythe his 2nd wife, and died without issue at London, 5 January 1066 (buried Westminster Abbey) leaving as his heir, his cousin, William II, Duke of Normandy. He was succeeded by his wife's nephew,

HAROLD II, King of England, who usurped the Crown, 7 January 1066 (son of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, by Gythe, his 2nd wife), born circa 1022, Earl of Wessex 1053, married 1stly to - and had issue, three sons and one daughter. He married 2ndly, circa 1064, Algatha, widow of Gryffith, Prince of North Wales, and daughter of Algar, Earl of Mercia, and had further issue, one son.

HAROLD II was killed. in battle near Hastings, 14 October 1066 (buried at Waltham Abbey), and was succeeded by,



WILLIAM I to HENRY II (1066 to 1189)
