WILLIAM WALLACE

The son of a Scottish knight, William Wallace led Scotland in war against the English invaders. His army liberated much of Scotland including a significant victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. He then marched on England, raiding Newcastle and the surrounding area, only to be defeated the following year at Falkirk.

Though he continued to fight against the English for another 7 years, he was betrayed, tried and executed in 1305.
