OFFICE OF THE CHIEF HERALD OF IRELAND
The Office of the Chief Herald of Ireland, based in Dublin, is the authority on all heraldic matters relating to Ireland.
Earliest references to heralds of arms in Ireland date back to 1382 where records show that John Chandos was appointed "Ireland King of Arms" in that year. In 1552, Edward VI created the Office of Ulster King of Arms, appointing Bartholomew Butler as the first Ulster King of Arms, though it is not known why the name of Ulster was incorporated into the title.
The Registers of the Chief Herald at the Genealogical Office, are available to be viewed by the public, by prior arrangement. A number of collections and records are held including; the armorials and ordinaries of arms, the Funeral Entries, Lords' Entries and records of Knights Dubbed. Archived material continues to grow as work carried out by present-day Heralds builds to expand the collection. In addition, the State Heraldic Museum, sited at 2 Kildare Street, Dublin, has been linked to the Office since 1909. The collection incorporates material related to Irish and European heraldry.
