BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS

The internationally renowned Burghley Horse Trials take place around the end of August to early September. The venue for the event is Burghley House in Lincolnshire, which has been home to the Horse Trials since 1961, when Michael Cecil, the 8th Marquess of Exeter brought the event to his family estate. It is now the longest continuous running international event, and plays host to the finest event riders and horses from around the world.

Among the six Burghley Course Designers to date is Princess Anne’s former husband Capt Mark Philips CVO, who held the post from 1989-96 and 1998-2000. Captain Philips also achieved success at the three day event, winning on Maid Marion in 1973, as did HRH Princess Anne on Doublet in 1971.

Burghley House was built by William Cecil, 1st Lord Burghley, between 1565 and 1587, and has remained in the Cecil family ever since. It is currently home to the 6th Marquess of Exeter’s daughter Lady Victoria Leatham, who is President of the Burghley Horse Trials.
