BATTLE OF HASTINGS

The Battle of Hastings took place on the 14th of October 1066 between the forces of Harold II of England and William, Duke of Normandy. William was victorious and established the Normans as the rulers of England. This was the last time England was successfully invaded and conquered by a foreign army.

Burke's Peerage and Gentry families that were involved in the battle include Walter, Sire de Longueville (family record of Giffard of Chillington), who accompanied William the Conqueror in the invasion of 1066. He received no fewer than 107 lordships and manors, of which 48 were in Buckinghamshire.

Ralph de la Pomerali also accompanied William and was granted 58 lordships in Devon.
