ROYAL RESIDENCES - Buckingham Palace
The official London residence of the royal family.
The Palace was built in 1703 by the Earl of Mulgrave. Built at the end of the Mall it was then called Buckingham House. A descendant of the 3rd Earl, Sir Charles Sheffield 1st Bt (qv) sold it to GEORGE III in 1761 for £21,000 (over £1.2m in late-1990s terms) and having been much enlarged and altered it became known as Buckingham Palace.
