ROYAL RESIDENCES - Castle of Mey

The Castle of Mey looks out to sea from the northern coast of Scotland between Thurso and John O'Groats. It was built between 1566 and 1572 by George, the fourth Earl of Caithness and was passed on his death to his sons. The Castle became the seat of the Earls of Caithness in 1789 and was the family seat for the next 100 years. The Castle of Mey was later to be owned by Captain F B Imbert-Terry who in 1952 sold the castle to the Queen Mother.

The Castle of Mey was said to be one of the Queen Mother's favourite places and she visited each August and October. In 1996 it was put in the care of a charitable trust and there are plans to open the castle for the first time to the public in August 2002.
