IRELAND - CASHEL CASTLE

The Rock of Cashel is a magnificent sight situated on the outskirts of Cashel. The limestone mound is home to the ruins of a cathedral, castle, round tower and numerous other structures and surrounded by a mighty wall. The structure dates back to the 5th century and has links with Christainity as was home to a royal fortress of the Eoghanacht clan. The Eoghanacht clan ruled Munster for 400 years and one of the Eoghanacht kings was converted to the Christain faith by Saint Patrick. In the 10th century the site was taken by the Dal gCaise clan and the Eoghanacht clan would later move to Cork and became the McCarthy kings of Desmond. In 1647 the Rock fell to Cromwell and his army, led by Lord Inchiquin. Today the Rock of Cashel has been restored and is a popular tourist destination with many exhibits including silverware and St. Patrick's Cross.
